Meet Nikki; she is one of our senior careers’ advisers for the National Careers Service in the Northwest.

Nikki has been with the National Careers Service for three years. She helps support people in Greater Manchester and she also helps the other advisers in the area whenever they need her.

We sat down to discuss her job and how she got into this role so you can get to know her better!

Let’s start of with why did you want to become a careers adviser?

“Before working for the National Careers Service, I was a teacher for 13 years but started to find it didn’t suit the work-life balance I needed.

“I had a young child at the time,” she explains, “and I needed to swap professions to find something that fit around my family better.”

“I actually went to see a careers adviser in Wales, which basically led me down this path.

“As a careers adviser, I’m still able to use the skill-set I got from being a teacher to help people,” Nikki added.    photo of a team of careers advisers

What is your favourite part of being a National Careers Service employee?

“I really like the variety; we can work in so many different ways.

“From workshops, working in JobCentres, community hubs and careers fairs, there are so many ways we can reach out to people.”

Nikki adds;“ I think a lot of people struggle to see how they can compete, or offer anything to a different sector, if they’ve been in the same job for a long time.”

But Nikki is living proof that it can happen.

“It’s really nice able to help boost their confidence and to be able to work with the rest of the team,” she tells us.

Next up, what do you think the National Careers Service does really well?

“I think the fact that we’re here for anyone and everyone means there’s no eligibility criteria for the National Careers Service.

“No matter whether you are working, not working, or have extra needs, we can support you!”

Nikki continues, “We’re also really, really passionate and just want to help people see the best side of themselves.”

To finish up, what would you say to someone who is thinking of contacting the National Careers Service but is a little nervous?

“Make that call,” Nikki enthuses, “we are all very welcoming and non-judgemental.

“Advisers aren’t here to put pressure on you to make your decisions. We are just a listening, professional ear to have a friendly conversation with, which will help you make those decisions.”

We want to say a massive thank you to Nikki for chatting with us!
