After a brief period of unemployment following a redundancy, 65-year-old Denise joined the Swindon Work and Health Programme in December 2023.

Denise was not feeling confident about finding a new job after being in her last job for 14 years.

She discussed her needs with her Work and Health Programme employment advisor, Charlotte.

Digital skills training with our specialist provider, Cosmic

The employment market had significantly changed since Denise last applied for a job, notably the process had moved online.

Denise wanted to improve her digital skills and become confident independently job searching online.

Charlotte recommended digital skills training with our specialist provider, Cosmic, and for Denise to brush up on her employability skills.

Denise engaged with Cosmic and received some help with how to use her smart phone and emails for job searching.

Although, initially, she didn’t feel fully confident being online, Denise sat with Charlotte regularly and began applying for jobs.

Denise started using emails more often to communicate with her friends, family and with Seetec.

Her efforts soon paid off when she was invited to an interview with a local bowling company.

She was pleased to accept a mock interview with employability trainer, Stephen, as it had been over 14 years since her last interview

Denise tells us; “I never had to interview for a long time, this training gave me confidence.”

After landing a part-time job as a cleaner at the bowling alley, Denise was determined to work more hours.

Back to school

She continued to look for a second job when Charlotte contacted her about an opportunity to work as a cleaner at a local school.

Having looked at the details of the job at the school, Denise found that it was flexible and worked well with her current job.

Charlotte submitted Denise for the role and after a successful interview and security checks, Denise had secured the second job she was looking for.

Denise now hopes to continue working both jobs until she retires next year.

She says; “I’ve had fantastic support and was always welcomed to come back.”

Denise continues; “I would recommend Work and Health Programme because the support and help with jobs is really good!”

Denise, you are the definition of ‘never give up’ – congratulations on your TWO jobs!
